Team Read’s Spring Benefit Luncheon is less than four months away and we’re thrilled to announce two exciting guest speakers: newly-elected King County Councilmember Girmay Zahilay and Team Read alumna Anne Wang-Annanie.

Girmay Zahilay is the King County Councilmember-elect representing District 2. He is the son of Ethiopian refugees, the first in his family to attend high school or college, and a product of Seattle public housing communities and public schools. He is an attorney, non-profit founder, and organizer. The nonprofit that he co-founded, Rising Leaders, aims to equip underserved middle school students with professional networks, mentorship, and monthly trainings around leadership and life skills. Zahilay’s life experiences have shaped his desire to pursue public service and fight for our poor and working-class neighbors.

Anne Wang-Annanie began her Team Read journey as a student reader at Northgate Elementary. She grew up speaking Chinese and Korean at home and had to learn English at school. “Receiving the extra reading support from Team Read was absolutely a positive experience that helped me build my future,” she says. Anne returned to the program as a reading coach at Olympic Hills Elementary in 2006, and then worked as Team Read’s summer program coordinator in 2016. She now teaches middle school science – and fully recognizes that fluent reading is key to her students’ success.
