Book bags2

To encourage students to read at home in addition to their tutoring sessions at local Seattle Public Library branches, each student receives a “book bag.” Although the book bag is a simple gallon-sized Ziploc bag, students personalize their bags however they like. Students can borrow Team Read books or check out a Seattle Public Library book to read at home.

At the beginning of each reading tutoring session, students discuss the stories they read at home with their teen reading coaches. The reading coaches ask the students questions to further thinking and engagement with the stories. Reading is a crucial life skill and it should be a fun activity for students. Encouraging students to read books at an appropriate level outside of their structured tutoring sessions is crucial to developing a lifelong love of books and reading.
