We’re up and running at all our elementary school sites in the Seattle, Highline, and Renton school districts and working with Tukwila on their timeline to launch. While some students are still in process to be matched with a coach, we anticipate pairing approximately 340 teen coaches with over 400 readers for a year of results-driven tutoring with the help of our research-backed peer model. That’s a lot of words for: big impact up ahead for both!
Team Read has been helping struggling young readers improve their reading skills for 25 years, but the kind of high quality, reliable support the program provides has never been more important than it is right now. Two and a half years since the Covid-19 pandemic first interrupted classroom instruction and nearly every aspect of students’ lives, students are still experiencing learning loss and working hard to catch up. A recent study conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) found that the average score on the National Assessment of Student Progress (NAEP) for age 9 students in 2022 declined 5 points in reading compared to 2020. “This is the largest average score decline in reading since 1990 (p. 1),” noted the study authors.
Teachers alone can’t help them recover. They need partners like Team Read, with tutoring that complements and aligns with their classroom instruction.
They can’t do it without us, and we can’t do it without you. That’s what being a team is all about.
