Team Read is excited to welcome our Teens in Public Service (TIPS) intern, Conan! This summer he will conduct research on best practices for summer education programs, online tutoring, and ways Team Read can engage in advocacy. He will also create an evaluation of our summer online tutoring program from the coaches’ perspective.
Why did you want to work with Team Read?
When I applied to become a TIPS intern, I emphasized my mission to make my community a more equitable place. Team Read’s goal to help improve literacy through tutoring really stuck with me, and as an intern I could broaden these opportunities.
Which project(s) are you most looking forward to working on this summer?
As Team Read is transitioning online in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, I think implementing tools for connecting to students and ensuring education this summer will present a nice challenge. Also, I’m really excited to be just learning about how a nonprofit works in general, through my work in organization and research.
What new skills/experiences are you hoping to gain during your internship?
This is my first real job, so I’m anticipating a lot of learning through collaborating with other employees. Specifically, I’ll be researching ways to transition learning programs online. I believe this will be valuable to me, as I’m pursuing a career in computer science and I’ll get to experience many of its applications this summer.
What is your favorite book?
Homo Deus by Yuval Noah Harari! It’s a nonfiction book that details predictions for the future, with an evolutionary and technological perspective. I found it extremely interesting, and especially now, five years after its publication, it’s very fulfilling to read in retrospect. Highly recommend.
What’s your favorite summer activity?
I used to live in California, so I love going to the beach!
