We’ve had so many amazing pairs working together this year in Team Read, and thanks to our dedicated teen coaches, many students are now reading at grade level (or higher)! “Kalie has worked as a coach for a couple of years and is fantastic,” says site coordinator Sandy. “She is very conscientious, has great rapport with her students and always contributes to coach debriefs and discussions by offering unique and thoughtful solutions and comments.”
Kaile’s student reader, Nebyu, joined Team Read three years ago in 2nd grade. He’s very bright and artistic, and asks Kalie lots of questions while they are reading together. “Nebyu really loves nonfiction books and he knows a lot of information! For example, we were reading a book about magnetism and he told me a bunch of facts about atoms,” she explains.
Nebyu enjoys reading and learning with Kaile. “She’s really fun and she helps me when things get hard,” he says. “I like when she reads to me. It makes me go to another planet, like I’m in the story.” Some of his favorite books are Geronimo Stilton, Dog Man, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Big Nate, and Captain Underpants.
This powerful pair has made great progress together during their time in Team Read. Site Coordinator Sandy says Nebyu has matured a lot this year, and Kalie has learned to ask him more difficult comprehension questions that inspire Nebyu to think about and focus on the book he’s reading. “Kalie has helped me become a stronger reader!” Nebyu exclaims.
Congrats to Nebyu, Kailie, and all our incredible reading pairs for finishing another great year of Team Read!
